01 · Typical equipment

The equipment the maintenance work is about.

And what usually happens to it.

  • Inlet pumpsImpeller clogging with rags, wear, seals
  • Bar screensRake jams, chain, drive motor
  • Aeration blowersBearing temperature, inlet filter, belts
  • RAS and WAS pumpsSeal leaks, clogging, wear
  • Secondary clarifier bridgesWheels and rail, gearbox, blades
  • Anoxic mixersBearings, cable, submersible seals
  • Screw pressScrew wear, screen basket, polymer pump
  • Dosing pumpsDiaphragm, valves, calibration

02 · Five common problems

Five places where wastewater plant maintenance usually struggles.

  1. 01

    Aeration blowers

The plant’s biggest energy users, and when one fails, dissolved oxygen drops straight away. Bearing temperature, inlet filters and belts need to be seen with their history, not only when the blower trips.

  2. 02

    Return sludge pumps

If return sludge drops, the biological process suffers. Seals and impellers on these pumps are high-use parts and need to be in stock before they’re needed.

  3. 03

    Bar screens

Every time a screen stops, rags reach the pumps and mixers. Inlet pump failures often start here, and seeing that recurrence makes the cause clear.

  4. 04

    Secondary clarifier bridges

They turn slowly and quietly, so they get forgotten. When one stops, sludge stays in the clarifier and effluent quality drops.

  5. 05

    Sludge dewatering

The screw press and polymer pump work together. Recording polymer use and the condition of the screen and screw makes the cost and failures of this area trackable.

03 · Key readings

DO, MLSS, inlet flow and effluent TSS.

Each reading on its own measurement point, with its expected range and a 24-hour trend.
