01 · Typical equipment

The equipment the maintenance work is about.

And what usually happens to it.

  • Raw water and transfer pumpsImpeller wear, bearing vibration, seal leaks
  • Backwash pumpsShort, heavy duty cycles; bearings and alignment
  • Air scour blowersInlet filter, bearing temperature, check valve
  • Coagulant dosing pumpsDiaphragm failure, valve clogging, calibration
  • ChlorinatorLeaks, regulator, cylinder safety
  • Mixers and flocculator drivesGearbox, oil, coupling
  • Sedimentation scrapersChain and flights, jamming in sludge
  • Valves and actuatorsSticking, sealing, actuator control

02 · Five common problems

Five places where water plant maintenance usually struggles.

  1. 01

Backwash pumps and air scour blowers

They run several times a day, briefly and at full load. Calendar PM isn’t enough; run hours or the number of backwashes is a better basis, and bearing vibration gives warning before failure.

  2. 02

    Coagulant and chlorine dosing pumps

Small, but water quality depends on them. Diaphragms and valves are consumables, and if they’re not in stock, a standby pump won’t help for long.

  3. 03

    Transfer pumps

The most expensive rotating equipment in the plant. Each pump’s own history, separate from its position, shows which pump really has the problem.

  4. 04

    Sedimentation scrapers

They work under water and nobody sees them until they jam. Regular inspection and recording chain and flight condition prevents sudden stops.

  5. 05

    Valves and actuators

There are many of them and they usually get lost in the equipment list. A position code and a QR tag on each valve takes the record out of people’s memory.

03 · Key readings

Turbidity, residual chlorine, pH, flow and pressure.

Each reading on its own measurement point, with its expected range and a 24-hour trend.
